Blackhawk Fire Protection District
proudly protects 8500 people living in an area of 24 square miles. We
operate out of 1 station and protect a primarily rural residential area.
Our department is a public department whose members are professional
volunteers.
Organized in December of 1952 and
officially beginning service in April of 1954, the Blackhawk Fire
Protection District / Department serves a rural residential and farming
community on the southwest outskirts of Rockford, IL, with fire
suppression and emergency medical response services.

Notice of Hiring Examination
Blackhawk Fire Protection District and New Milford Fire Protection District notice of hiring examination.
Open written testing is conducted year-round at Sauk Valley Community College. An eligibility list from
candidates is to be compiled from this testing on December 23rd, 2024. The written exam will be computer
based and candidates will need to take the exam at Sauk Valley Community College Testing Center, 173 IL
Route 2, Dixon IL 61021. The exam can be taken during normal testing center hours, Monday through Friday.

. A $43 testing fee will need to be paid by the candidates.

Minimum Qualifications: There are certain qualifications that an applicant must meet in order to become a Blackhawk / New Milford Firefighter. The qualifications set forth are established by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners' Rules and Regulations, and all applicable state statutes.

Minimum Age: No individual may be appointed as a sworn member of the Fire Department until he or she has passed his or her twenty-first (21st) birthday. Proof of an applicant's birth date will be required before the appointment.

Maximum Age: An applicant must not have attained the age of 35 years by the closing date of the application period for this recruiting cycle.

Driver's License:
An applicant shall possess a valid driver's license at the time of hiring.
At the conclusion of recruit training, the recruit must possess a valid Illinois driver's license with a Class B, Non-CDL permit
At the conclusion of one-year probation, the recruit must possess a valid Illinois Class B, Non-CDL driver's license

Vision: An applicant upon time of hire shall have correctable vision to 20/20 in each eye.
Education: An applicant shall have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Arrest Record: An applicant must not have any felony convictions nor have been convicted of certain misdemeanors.

Citizenship: Applicants for examination must be U.S. Citizens or those aliens who meet the criteria set forth in 8 USC. Section 1324b prior to the closing date of the application period.

CPAT: Candidate Physical Ability Test card will be needed at time of hire.

Preference Points: Points are added to the candidate's overall score.
